MILWAUKEE (AP) Republican lawmakers tried to drum up support Saturday for their proposal to limit local property tax increases, telling several hundred supporters at a rally that Wisconsinites can't afford to pay for more increases. The state Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to override Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of the Republican plan, which would severely limit local property tax increases over the next three years. Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer, R-West Bend, called Tuesday judgment day.

"We're going to get us out of this taxpayers hell," she told the crowd at Serb Hall, on Milwaukee's south side. Republicans control the Senate 18-15 and would need four Democrats to join them for the 22 votes necessary to override the veto. If the Senate overrides the veto, it then goes to the Assembly, which is controlled 5940 by Republicans. Fire at cottage kills woman, boy TOWN OF DUNN (AP) -A fire swept through a summer cottage, killing a woman and a boy, Dane County sheriffs officials said Saturday. A neighbor contacted authorities Friday night after seeing flames. Fire officials found the bodies of an adult female and a male juvenile inside the cottage, along with a dog.

Officials did not immediately release the names or ages of the victims. Officer accused of sex assault MILWAUKEE (AP) A police officer has been charged with four counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child for allegedly assaulting a girl while he was off-duty. A criminal complaint filed Friday in Milwaukee County circuit court accuses Rafael Rivera, 31, an officer since 1994, of sexually assaulting a girl between May 2001 and December 2002. The girl said the assaults began when she was 11 years old. Rivera is on administrative leave.

2 injured aboard Midwest flight MILWAUKEE (AP) A Midwest Airlines airplane with 113 passengers aboard rapidly descended because of severe turbulence, leaving two flight attendants with broken bones after they ricocheted between the cabin roof and floor. One attendant's leg was broken, while the other fractured her pelvis in several places. The plane, which departed San Francisco Thursday morning, was forced to make an emergency landing in Denver. It finally arrived in Milwaukee at 3:02 p.m. Friday.

Passengers aboard Midwest Airlines Flight 9 used magazines and an apron to splint the multiple fractures in one attendant leg. Others collected blankets and pillows to make the other attendant comfortable. Inmate dies in Waukesha jail WAUKESHA (AP) A Waukesha County inmate died Friday in the Waukesha County Jail, and his family has already taken steps toward seeking damages against the county. William Cresca, 49, was pronounced dead at Waukesha Memorial Hospital early Friday after he collapsed in the company of correctional officers who had taken him to the jail nurse shortly after 1 a.m. Man gets maximum for killing girlfriend MARINETTE (AP) A 33-year-old man who stabbed his girlfriend to death after an argument has been sentenced to the maximum penalty, 40 years in prison.

Jamie Atwood pleaded guilty in Marinette County Circuit Court in June to a reduced charge of second-degree intentional homicide for the death of 34-year-old Jodi Gerondale. He was charged with first-degree intentional homicide. She and Leo James Hickey were married on Sept. 1, 1934, in Waukegan, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1995. Mrs. Hickey had been a resident of Carolina Beach since moving there in 1997 from Ardmore, Okla.

While in Ardmore, Stacia was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Parish. Mrs. Hickey had spent many years living in Sheboygan and La Crosse. She spent most of her life as a homemaker.

Stacia managed Wendy's Hat Shoppe after attending millenary school where she personally designed many hats and wedding veils for the local ladies in Sheboygan. She also was involved in various volunteer organizations, Wives, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, teachers aide, Knights of Columbus Wives and a Eucnaristic Minister. Mrs. Hickey was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Wilmington, N.C. She is survived by her sons, Bernard L.

Hickey and wife Judy of Sheboygan, and Robert W. Hickey Edna E. Edna E. Kiel, 97, formerly of S. 14th went to her Lord Friday afternoon, Aug.
